New standards for postgraduate doctors’ training, Excellence by design: standards for postgraduate curricula, have been released by the General Medical Council (GMC).
The new standards are expected to improve the flexibility of doctors’ training. A GMC review of flexible training published in March identified difficulties in the organisation of postgraduate training which made it difficult for trainees to switch specialty and their training could not adapt quickly to the changing needs of patients.
A small number of medical colleges and faculties are expected to seek approval for new curricula in 2017, but the process of updating all curricula is intended to be completed by 2020.
Charlie Massey, GMC Chief Executive, said: ‘Medical training in the UK is high quality, but as well as producing doctors who are technically proficient it is important they are equipped with the broader professional skills they need to become and stay good professionals.’
