Asthma affects an estimated 300 million individuals worldwide, and still imposes an unacceptable burden on healthcare systems, society through loss of productivity in the workplace, and, especially for paediatric asthma, disruption to the family. Asthma affects all age groups and contributes to many deaths worldwide.

The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) was established to increase awareness about asthma among healthcare professionals, and to improve prevention and management of asthma worldwide. The global strategy for asthma management and prevention is in its 25th year and is updated annually based on the most up to date clinical information on asthma management.

The Guidelines team has produced four summaries of the GINA strategy 2020, for adults and children over five years:

  • Diagnosis
  • Assessment
  • Management
  • Asthma-COPD overlap
