The British Thoracic Society (BTS) has published the British Thoracic Society guidelines for the management of non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD).

Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) refers to species of mycobacterium that do not cause tuberculosis. These infections cause progressive inflammatory lung damage, but can also reside in the lungs of patients who do not have any symptoms of NTM-PD. This leads to difficulties in detection and deciding who and when to treat.

Areas covered by the BTS guideline include:

  • epidemiology
  • transmission of NTM
  • detection of NTM
  • investigations
  • management, including antibiotic therapy and surgery.
