In response to many requests from healthcare professionals, Asthma UK and Dr Robin Carr (GP, Oxfordshire CCG) have collaborated to develop asthma action plans for non-English speaking patients. These action plans aim to help patients from ethnic minority populations to manage their asthma more effectively. All of the non-English asthma action plans contain the same up-to-date, Information Standard-accredited advice as the English plan, and the translations have been approved by multilingual professionals.

The free asthma action plans are now available to download in the following 11 languages:

  • Arabic
  • Bengali
  • Cantonese
  • Farsi
  • Kurdish
  • Mandarin
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Punjabi
  • Urdu
  • Welsh.

Patients with a written asthma action plan are four times less likely to be admitted to hospital for asthma. The simple traffic light system can help them to understand what medicines they need to take and when, and to recognise when their asthma is getting worse and what they need to do.

Tips for non-English speaking patients to get the best from their action plan include:

  • encouraging the patient to keep a copy at hand, and to share the spare copies with their friends and family
  • keeping a completed copy of the patient’s action plan on file for their next asthma review or appointment.
